Collagen Benefits + How To Get Collagen From Plants | Plant-Based

– Hi, I’m Rachelle Robinett, an herbalist
and holistic health practitioner,
your host of Plant Based,
and today I’m going to
tell you about collagen.
(calm electronic music)
Collagen is critical
for the health of hair,
skin, and nails, but also teeth, tendons,
blood vessels, digestive system, and more.
Collagen makes up 30% of
the protein in our bodies
and 70% of the protein in our skin,
so most immediately it is
thought of as a beauty food,
something that is going
to help with elasticity.
Collagen can be thought of as the glue
that keeps things together,
but it’s also an essential part
of recovery, of growth or building,
and of aging gracefully.
After the age of 35,
our collagen production
starts to slow down, very
similar to what happens
with muscle mass, we start to lose that
as we get older.
So supplementing with collagen
can be a really wonderful way
to maintain that youthfulness.
It’s not just about
youthfulness, it really is
an essential part of our
bodies functioning well.
So one way to get
collagen is to supplement
with a collagen product.
That’s very popular right
now and there are lots
of options but for the plant-based folks,
we have plant-based sources
of collagen support.
I’m partial to plant-based
supplements for collagen support
because similarly to when we eat protein,
if we eat collagen, it
doesn’t necessarily translate
directly back into collagen in our cheeks
or in our bones.
Supplying the body with the
essential building blocks
is a great way to then ensure
that it has what it needs
to build the amount of
collagen that it needs.
So we have fo-ti or he
shou wu which is sometimes
called an elixir of life.
It is an ancient, ancient
remedy that’s best reputation
is for preventing or reversing gray hair.
There is also horsetail, and horsetail
is again, very, very old, high in silica,
most notably, silica is supportive
of blood vessel creation,
tendons, and muscles.
This is again one of those building blocks
for the production of collagen.
We also have gynostemma,
and this herb is incredible.
It is similar to ginseng but has about
80 of the kind of active
compounds in ginseng
whereas ginseng has about 25, 28.
Many times over more
powerful than ginseng,
and most importantly, gynostemma is high
in glutathione and superoxide dismutase,
so these are super, super
potent antioxidants.
Antioxidants are anti-aging, they are
neutralizing free radicals.
Nettle, my old favorite,
nettle’s my buddy,
so high in chlorophyll, high in minerals,
this is your multivitamin in herbal form.
We also have calendula.
Calendula is a sort of salve for the body,
so salve in the sense
of a mender, a healer,
a bandaid if you will throughout the body
and again, providing the nutrients
and the amino acids that we
need to produce collagen.
One of my favorite
plant-based collagen products
on the market is made
by Anima Mundi Herbals
and this blend of herbs is
high in calcium, silica,
copper, and other sort of
minerals that are important
for bone health, and this
is all the building blocks
that we need to produce our own collagen.
While it’s fun to work
these products into water
or a smoothie or something
like that, we’re going
to make something that is delicious,
so let’s get started on
a vegan collagen lassi.
One-half cup rose tea, let
steep for five to seven minutes.
One cup alt yogurt.
One-half cup oat milk.
Four tablespoons of
golden raisins, soaked.
Three to five dates, pitted,
depending on the size
of your dates.
One-inch piece of fresh ginger.
And four teaspoons of collagen tonic,
or about four servings
of any collagen product
that you’re using.
Add everything into the
blender and blend on high
until it is frothy,
creamy, full, and fluffy.
Serve immediately.
All right, so here we have
our vegan collagen lassi.
It is beautiful, let’s see how it tastes.
It tastes herbal and sweet
and complex, a little bit like fruit,
a little bit like rose,
it’s really delicious
and this, it’s a little
warm from the blender,
beautiful to serve that
way but it would also be
so delicious over ice and obviously,
full of the plant-based
collagen, which is great
for our collagen production
and so many other things.

    Straighten out my confusion, please. The very beginning of the video shows you pouring the rose tea into the Vitamix canister, but when you add the yogurt, there is no tea in the canister. Did you use the tea or not? And, what is the liquid in the jar, besides collagen supplement?

    Is it me or does it look like she's in a haze of smoke? All I'm seeing is the bright window and the haze. Great content, great set but horrible video and the music is distracting.

    The video recipe shows "4 tbsp" (or tablespoons) of the collagen elixir. However the presenter clearly states 4 teaspoons and mentions 4 servings of the elixir. Pls correct the recipe.
