stockholders trying to maximize quarterly profit check for up no that’s how the system works right the system is set up to incentivize the selling of junk is broccoli pure profit no it’s perishable produce goes bad it’s like you want profits and worsening you want something shelf-stable you want the Twinkie that sits on the shelf for weeks right you can make money off of that last year was a massive year for 14 Gregor your Bert counter to die was a New York Times top 10 best at how does it feel to have helped so many people yeah and in fact right now 20 months later it’s a top 10 New York Times best seller man that’s extraordinary but I knew would always appeal to those who preach in my work but the fact that had such a kind of really mainstream impact as I kind of become more of a kind of cultural phenomenon that’s that’s that’s really exciting and she shows that people are hungry for this information people want to you know want to make evidence-based decisions about the health of themselves and their families which of course makes it why do you think there’s such an appetite for this information I think there’s such a corrupting influence of commercialism within the field of nutrition medicine broadly but it’s like who can you trust you get conflicting messages all the time and they always seem to be you know so the dairy industry would say be dairy and the egg industry of to eat eggs and they you know have their own studies that they fund to put out and they pay up journalism they you know and so that’s where nutritionfacts.org came about but frankly there should be 20 nutrition facts that are so certainly it’s about a hundred thousand papers focused on nutrition and peer-reviewed medical literature every year but we our team can read as many as we can put them and it’s just tremendous amount of information out there what about Fitness facts or what about sleep medicine facts are oh I mean you know if someone says some new fitness routine is good for you is that because they’re selling their credit betting people on the door or is that because there’s really true and the reason that they’re selling it is because they found it so useful like you never know that’s what’s so frustrating is it true or is it spin and so that’s that’s why I do what I do and he D think has more influence over the medical industry pharmaceutical industries or the animal agricultural industries oh well uh I mean Big Pharma obviously I mean the bigger this is their whole stick right I mean by definition you can’t get most of Big Pharma’s drugs even though now they’re in supplement industry and over counter you can’t get most of drugs unless they’re prescribed by a doctor so I mean their whole economic model is to you know convince doctors to prescribe not just any drugs but their particular drugs and it’s been lots of great books and expose is written about kind of slimy things many of these drug companies do but I mean so that’s the direct influence the doctors aren’t really getting many nutrition messages at all either way but it’s interesting on people you know I talk about the lack of nutrition education and medical education you know instead of less than a quarter of medical schools have a single dedicated course of nutrition you know and so people like we got to get more nutrition in medicine if it’s the true if it’s evidence-based nutrition absolutely but if they’re going to get you know what the dietitians are getting right dietitians that’s all they do they go through years of just nutrition education but they come out no more I mean they come out being able to you know mix TPN orders which like IV medications but they don’t know clinical nutrition disease reversal nutrition why because their materials are written by the dairy board and by the I mean you know you go to these conferences and sponsored by McDonald’s and Coca Cola and that’s that that’s what’s inferring influencing them in their education so if by more medical education for physicians it means some coca-cola sponsored seminar ID rather than not here the rather a bit less nutrition education what we need is more evidence-based nutrition education in medicine and everywhere else what is the most striking example of bias research you’ve ever seen probably the industry that has really the worst track record is probably yeah there is a beef study the bold side the beef study and the eggs the the National Academies Beef Association mod funded this so-called bold study and and then the egg board continues to find these really slimy you know the basically construct the study design in a way to get the result they want and I mean it’s just obvious I mean what’s obvious they want to know but it’s not obvious to someone just reading the papers like oh this isn’t a problem but then you see how they did the study and you recognize the the biology and you realize oh that’s outrage should never been published I mean it was just this blatant attempt at trying to mislead the scientific community when we thought about some of the the misinformation and folks research do you agree that it makes us think that the whole system is corrupt well see the corrupt is the wrong word it’s not it’s just the way the system works like okay stockholders trying to maximize quarterly profits is that corrupt no that’s how the system works right I mean the you know the the president of coca-cola doesn’t have some secret villainous plans to make kids obese I mean they’re just not thinking how can we make kids sicker what they’re thinking is how do I maximize profits for my shareholders that’s the system and so how do you make a lot of profits well dirt cheap and greens we subsidize the sugar industry with our taxpayer dollars dirt even grease sell for a few bucks a ball right it’s like pure profit right is broccoli pure profit no it’s perishable produce goes bad it’s like you want province of worse thing you want something to sell stable you want the Twinkie that sits on the shelf for weeks right you can make money off of that right it has a brand name even a broccoli grow I’m putting that on TV for rock because you microfiber competitors Berkeley it doesn’t make any financial set the system is set up to incentivize the selling of junk and of course we don’t just subsidize sugar we says that I steamed crops so we can have a dollar menu burgers right I mean so the whole system is set up so it’s not corrupt it’s not like um you know they’re they’re they’re slipping you know suitcases full of money under somebody no it’s just that’s how the system works the system works by rewarding making people sick how do cos patrols make money healthy people know operations make right make the whole system instead of how do doctors make money the most common doctor visit is called a blood pressure check easiest visit in the world I come in to get a blood pressure checked and then you tweak the medication oh my god it’s like a dream visit for that you don’t have to think you can be thinking about you know your grocery list at night while doing this because there’s nothing to do you just do all it – I will increase the drug to low will decrease it right I mean and so that’s that’s that’s the money that’s rolling in right that’s what most of us it’s coming for all right now if all of a sudden that I’ll go first because not have our blood pressure anymore the Big Pharma loses the doctor loses the hospitals lose the whole system loses no one’s buying anything that’s profiting shareholders it’s not corruption it’s just how the system works but we can take personal responsibility for our own health for our family self we don’t have to wait till you know the system catches up to the science uh you know we can we can change ourselves because look it’s a matter of life and death what can the scientific community be oh the scientific community I mean they’re I don’t see their role as you know persuade their roles to do science their role is to do good science and to minimize conflicts of interest to perhaps not take money from these corporate interests that are trying to skew the signs put our misinformation and you know look they continue to do the science but you know look they could all retire tonight there doesn’t have to be another paper published we already have the information in many cases had it for decades right doctor dinars published his lifestyle hard trial 1990 most prestigious medical journal real proving that the number one killer of men and women could be a reverse heart disease could be reversed with a plant-based dead no to healthy lifestyle behaviors like since then no one should have died of heart disease you’d hundreds of thousands of people continue to die in this preventable arrest of a reversible condition while another person dies of a heart attack why do any more research like the number one killer we got the research we need right look you know me I love research I mean you know obviously I mean in fact if I wasn’t doing this I do research myself I actually started out MD PhD because I love the research but you know toiling away in some laboratory studying some enzyme for forty years while people are dropping dead by the millions from preventable diseases I couldn’t justify that so on so I do this to get the word up what is the biggest misinformation about health in the mainstream um the biggest misinformation about health and mainstream is that you know pills and procedures or where it’s at I mean so foremost is I mean we have for acute conditions like break a leg you have suffer an infection or something I mean modern medicine is just amazing right um thanks to antibiotics and other incredible advances but when it comes to chronic diseases we fail miserably as a profession right when it comes to you know men common cancers heart disease type two diabetes hypertension chronic kidney disease maybe these things I mean we just that’s that what we have in to offer may have little or no benefit or even and dive benefit right we kill 160,000 Americans every year through you know adverse drug reactions basically from side-effects from prescription drugs so you know doctors are in effect just from that stat alone six leading killer in the US and it is the medical profession and so um but look that you’re hoping that the the benefits outweigh the risks and so he says are going to surgery should okay but not recognising that these diseases in large part are lifestyle diseases are preventable in the first place people just don’t know that I mean that’s really the biggest misconception is that it’s just inevitable it’s inevitable I’m going to get XYZ cancer or heart disease or COPD no I mean in the vast majority of cases these diseases are lifestyle disease and with lifestyle changes they can be prevented in the first place so you’re saying the the doctors in general letting the pharmaceutical industry’s dictate their approach to curing disease well most of its ignorance frankly I mean the reason people go into medicine it’s not to make money if you want to make money you go to Wall Street or something maybe that’s see it’s an easier route for to buy BMW right people go into medicine at least initially because they’re idealistic and young and want to help people right you want to take care of sick people like that’s you know I mean that’s a that’s this wonderful empathetic and pathetic Drive I think drives most medical students now some of that is kind of beaten out of them throughout medical training that come out on the other side demanding reparations and you know give up their dreams of starting some homeless clinic and end up you know doing plastic surgery or something but but I think at least early on you know doctors want to help people and the only reason that their they don’t have these these meta these tools in the medical toolbox it’s not a way or the power that die can have on preventing arresting and reversing by 80 percent of the disease people see in primary care 80 percent these are lifestyle diseases so the treatment is lifestyle behavior change I mean you’ve dreamed about pills and procedures but these aren’t drug deficiency diseases these are diseases of lifestyle so we have actually tremendous power over our health and longevity the vast majority of premature death and disability is preventable with a plant-based diet and other healthy lifestyle behaviors so this is tremendous good news and when doctors figure it out they’re enthusiastic about it how do they find out that’s interesting so right now we’re at an international ma clinical nutrition conference for physicians and if you go up there in Anna um you know how did they come to this like how today how did you know because I probably didn’t get in medical school right because big for my controls much of medical education practice I mean you can ask your documents last time they’re taken out to dinner by big broccoli it’s probably been a lot I mean this is it’s just how we get our information both in medical school post graduate medical education continuing medical education it’s all you know drug most of this drug industry sponsored so of course we’re going to hear about drugs we’re not going to hear about nutrition okay but should we ask them well where did you I mean you obviously didn’t learn about it in school you know why are you here how’d it why are you why’d you change your entire practice to do lifestyle medicine and often it’s actually a patient one of their patient so one of the patients walking watches you know forks over knives or what the hell one of these other documentaries and takes it upon themselves to clean up their die right um I given just like you know getting a you know smoking cessation message so hey go you know I must quit smoking so they don’t even tell the doctor also they see the doctor six months later for whatever a blood pressure check or something and all of a sudden they’ve lost so much weight and they feel better the blood pressures down back the blood pressure may actually be too low sixteen you take pills and all of a sudden you’re treating the cause and I’ll have my blood version and more it could be dangerous drop their blood pressures too low so doctor asked to wean people off these drugs they go back to toxic Wow what’s happening you don’t need these drugs anymore cholesterol fine let’s we do off these drugs we’re not putting you on these drugs or cancel the surgery what did you do and the patient I hadn’t I saw this documentary I read this book I saw this website and the heard about this you know and tried it and then work for me and that’s really the convoy and so if it’s ironic I talk to these doctors right and it’s like basically that’s an anecdote it’s like the lowest form of evidence that we have get that’s with us because they have a personal relationship we’re like social creatures and you know when someone you know some of you family a fall for your salt Sunday they’ve been obese all their lives they’ve been you know had all these chronic health problems diabetic whatever and all of a sudden they’re better and people with chronic these aren’t supposed to get better right basically get worse worse worse than you died that’s kind of the traditional trajectory for most people with Karnas these all sudden someone’s getting better what do they do and so I said wait a second are you can this mouth of evidence published for decades I can show you a thousand studies that support this but somehow the the stack of studies doesn’t quite you know we aren’t rational creatures right people just don’t you know just I’m no aren’t thinking that way and it’s that personal story that actually turns them and they do this in it that’s just so frustrating me because like I’ve been telling you about that science forever and it’s just one person that all of a sudden comes along I mean what about a randomized control trial array of hundreds of people I mean that that should be much more convincing than one person right but on the pages numbers writes grabs right so what does it mean that X many percentage of people stop taking you know had it was able to stop taking insulin for their type two diabetes or something like that so each one of those is increment story each one of those as someone who’s not going to get their leg impeded not going to go blind not going to go on dialysis and that’s really I mean but I don’t think people just people don’t read they don’t make that connection but when I read papers that’s what I see I see that the human lives that are affected by these remarkable interventions and I’m just trying to get this information out there as much so yeah I just briefly want to talk about the what the health criticisms what the what do you think of them worth Chris isn’t specifically more a couple of blogs for example have written that the film provided a narrow a view of the science with cherry-picked studies how de as a medical doctor refuses well I mean so this charge that you know someone’s cherry-picking studies so for example you know like with heart is number one killer here in the state there’s only one done ever been proven to reverse heart disease in the majority of patients right and so it’s not like we just picked this one study let’s see it’s a hard to cherry-pick when there’s only one sherry right it’s never been shown right the only dive that’s been shown to you know improve mood in these randomized control trials or reverse heart disease I mean so it’s not like oh we’re not showing all the ones where the low-carb diet also reverse our Sinise no they don’t exist that’s what’s critical right is and so it’s not cherry-picking if there’s only one chair I mean that’s I think the most critical point to make that look you have a study you have this this unicorn study that supposedly shows you put people on bacon and eggs and in the majority that their heart disease disappears I will do a video about it that day I mean cuz people need to know that doesn’t exist right so it’s not like I’m chirping it’s just yeah I’m cherry-picking only the science that exists in this universe what he takes people like Ben Goldacre he say it’s really really hard to get good nutrition data just because of the way it’s not like of drugs waiting to wake and be blinded studies where it’s one drug of the up drug and they don’t know like ideally you’d want to put people in just free some veg or mean on crazy people camp in randomized controlled trials of diet you cook people on different diet and see what happens that’s what Ornish did lifestyle heart trial you can randomize people to a plant-based diet and have their heart disease go away what else you need what that study for example included exercise and some people put statins so what I’m trying to say is with dietary reactions in both groups right but on one group did the lifestyle changes it and the other group they didn’t do the lifestyle changes right I mean I’m a dad so like the science is in now I mean I’m what else you need right what is your take on like the the mainstream narrative which says the Mediterranean diet is optimal for health so look if you ask you know so when I you know when you go to you know one of these big mainstream metal crunches like TEDMED or something it’s actually will look they should know they’re smart people right usually heads of departments and I say you know what so you know what’s your take on the Ornish you know work body of work right this is decades old now and no one said questions the veracity the rigor of those scientific trials they say all patients are going to oh yeah I know yeah we can reverse our my patients won’t do it I can’t even get my patient stuff so I mean they’re never going to untie and bring it up what patronizing attitude that’s not your decision to make you’re making the decision for your patients that their two-week tour to whatever they’re not going to do it somebody may give them the option so I’m just going to tell them yeah open our surgery whatever now I say oh well yeah there’s also this thing where you can eat yummy food and also reverses disease right and part of its because then the next question is how do I do it and they’re they do their state of ignorance they may not know may not be able to counsel basis but they know what accounts patients on surgery and drugs I mean I mean so that the these aren’t the states are question it’s the compliance they don’t always going to do it it’s easier to take a pill if you take pill but the pills don’t work as well as Rachael thought you’re safer and cheaper wine based diets but can work better than the best mainstream medicine has no I’m what can we do to get people in positions of power to take meaningful action just have to share them right you just have to get this information into people’s in front of people I mean that’s the most important thing ignorant we I think many of us in the movement be like Oh everybody know everybody knows the process me cause cancer right everybody knows that the World Health Organization did theirs you know it was in my inbox for weeks because everyone’s sending me all these oh I bet you did a set I bet you do a public survey does bacon cause cancer does you know lunch meat deli slices turkey slices you know you know a sausage does does that cause cancer in human beings do we know that it causes cancer what percentage you think people I bet as low I bet it’s thought look even it was 99% there’s only one person that didn’t know we got our work cut out for it but I bet it’s you know one fine something like that the majority of people don’t know that the I are seeing the official body that in terms what is and is not carcinogenic right so what else Cheney the most prestigious medical body in the world when it comes to cancer says presses meat category 1 carcinogen we’re as certain to process because cancer there are that plutonium cuts cancer and as first discuss cancer in cigarette smoke causes cancer done no scientific debate right that’s the consensus so what do we do gotta get in people why isn’t it on it boys one side why isn’t it everybody like why are we telling people about it well why do we keep feeding it to kids in school a little car to milk a little carton of cigarettes what what are we doing right it’s ignorance now in our little plant-based world so I go everybody knows that and so why aren’t they doing it right oh go out into kind of the mainstream people don’t know this they’re not on nutrition websites they do I mean they just don’t know that they could be harming their children but why they’re not being any for many large randomized control trials dr. granik’s 2017 go to Gregor first one who’s going to fund them right make sure the reason that drug companies I have a huge rent I mean they can literally spend billions billions with the B dollars to do studies because they’re gonna recoup that car the number one drug best-selling drug in human history look at all right this cluster a low extend drug right bringing in tens of billions of dollars so you can spend a billion dollars because you’re kind of recouping right but who’s I mean you gotta put a billion dollars if you believe broccoli who’s going to pay for that it’s done and so there’s a problem with with pay now my answer is we should crowd fund studies I mean I think it’d be grade someone comes up with a good study design and says look okay I want to take you know metastatic breast cancer patients right I want to randomize them one plant based on the other you know some other kind of diet or whatever right and just let’s see who has improved survival who has low recurrence rates why is that study being done I mean yes it’s expensive but Michael wouldn’t chip in ten bucks just to see because you want to help people because you maybe know somebody with breast cancer I mean you know in fact cancer charities you know in fact chronic disease charities in general we’re talking about a long association these are really wealthy organizations why because people give to them because they have a family member something getting sick you know and they’re like well I want to you know help out other people with this kind of condition okay right why don’t we crowd fun science I mean so I mean I I don’t think so that should be necessarily a insurmountable barrier and we have the science we need again we have the signs we need now do we have a for metastatic breast cancer no that’s why I’d love to do that study blood what we do have is for early stage prostate cancer in fact even late stage prostate cancer I mean so that’s I mean so look and it works for all these other things prevents the number one cause death what else you need and there’s only one guy ever been proven to reverse heart disease in the majority of patients that’s a plant-based diet I mean anyone tries to sell you on some new diet look do me a favor ask him a simple question but hangs this new diet I had been proven to reverse heart disease you know number one two reason me and all my loved ones will die the answer’s no why would you even consider if that’s all on plant-based diets do reverse the number one killer of men and women shouldn’t that be the default diet to proven otherwise and the fact I can also prevent arrest and reverse other leading killers like type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure would seem to make the case for plant-based eating simply overwhelming what cons a plant-based diet helped tons of stuff that I can’t help I mean I mean that the amount of research we have about how many how many diseases are there thousands right how many how many diseases have been proven to be reversible um based diet painful right we just don’t have science but it’s like even if a plant-based diet but there’s no data to suggest it works for disease X well you still need a plan based exit bad enough you got X you don’t want to have X and 10 other things right and look sleepy cause of death my stuff would read I mean so of course you’d be a healthy diet regardless right it’s like um you know yeah does stopping smoking helped me with five myalgia I don’t it probably is date on that but let’s say there’s no data there’s never been a study looked at smoking cessation for my own right so would you say yeah I don’t worry about stopping smoking you say look it may help it may not help but you stopped smoking because it’s not good for you right there’s other things right how about fibromyalgia and lung cancer how would you like that right that’d be worse right so you don’t smoke whether or not it directly else disease or not and is there any evidence to show that plant-based diet can treat so help or even prevent infectious disease oh well I mean infectious disease of different causes and so certainly there’s studies for example showing that if you take older men women it’s 1560 seventies you randomize them into two groups one you give them more fresh produce more fruits and vegetables you can significally boost their protective added by response to pneumonia vaccination for the so to those who don’t you can get you can improve their immune function now does that translate out into lower pneumonia rates and disease endpoints we don’t have that that’d be more good studies to do and what do you want your your legacy to be um my legacy is is just putting is getting this out to people seriously as soon as people are exposed to this information and understand it’s it’s from a credible source then it’s totally after them and they’re I’m gonna leave it to other people other people can be like let me show you how to make good recipes let me show you how easy it is to go out to eat let me show you this is what to making your potluck right okay all that kind of outlook as long as people have this understand understanding um that’s as far as I mean if as soon as everybody in the world knows the truth what is it I’m retiring I am going to be on some desert Isle drinking kale smoothies on the beach what is the truth day for people tuning in and they can only listen for 30 seconds 30 seconds the number one cause of death the number one cause of disability according to global burden of disease – the biggest study of disease factors risk factors in human history funded by széll Melinda Gates Foundation number one cause of death number one cause of disability is our diet here in the state cigarette smoking now only goes about a half million Americans every year whereas our diet kills hundreds of thousands more you
