Dr Michael Greger In Heated Debate With Keto Promoter!


Recently Dr Michael Greger was being interviewed
on The #1 Podcast For Muscle Building and
Physique Mastery.
It felt like it got quite heated but actually
I really enjoyed the interview.
Often Dr Greger is being interviewed on vegan
channels but it was refreshing to hear him
on a channel that recommends the keto diet.
To give some introduction to the clip Dr Greger
has just been explaining how the world health
organisation body the IARC has determined
that processed meat is a category 1 carcinogen
in the same group as smoking and plutonium
and red meat as class 2a which is a probable
human carcinogen.
I highly recommend going over and listening
to the interview in full all the links are
in the description below…..The IARC determines
what is and is not cancer causing, it would
take an overwhelming amount of evidence to
challenge the mainstream view.
To challenge the prevailing scientific consensus
you would have to have just an extraordinary
amount of evidence to suggest that every other
scientist got it wrong.[I don’t know if
it’s every other scientist, I’ve seen
definitive research that says there’s absolutely
nothing detrimental about meat or animal products,
I think dairy is another topic, but when it
comes to just eating meat itself, what mechanism
does the World Health Organisation suggest
is the mechanism that is leading us to cancer?]
That’s a good question so there’s a bunch
of purported mechanisms so we don’t know
why it could be the nitrosamines, could be
the heme iron, could be TMAO, it could be
saturated fat, even cholesterol, it could
be the Neu5Gc.
Certainly mechanistically there’s lots of
different ways it could happen we’re not
exactly sure why.
For similar reasons we don’t know why fruits
and vegetables exactly are so wonderful for
us.
Is it the fiber, the folate, phyto-nutrients?
But we know, not just from observational studies,
where people who eat lots of fruits and vegetables
live longer and healthier.
You can do randomized controlled trials, there’s
only one diet that’s ever been proven to
reverse heart disease in the majority of patients
and that’s a plant based diet.
So if that’s all a plant based diet can
do- reverse the number 1 killer of men and
women shouldn’t that be the default diet
until proven otherwise and the fact that it
can also be so effective at preventing, arresting
and reversing other leading killers, type
2 diabetes, hypertension would seem to make
the case for plant based eating simply overwhelming.
No other diet on the planet has ever been
shown to do that so if you care about health
and longevity that’s what you eat until
we know better.
[Interesting so now I’ve seen conflicting
data that says the opposite right, it says
there are people talking about how plant based
diet is causing these things have you seen
any of that data and what do you say to that?]
Look I’m talking about the Lifestyle heart
trial published by Dr Dean Ornish July 21st
1990 in the most prestigious medical journal
in the world [Sure 1990 was 28 years ago though]
Exactly!
Exactly, so we’ve known for decades we have
the cure to the number 1 reason you and your
love ones will die yet hundreds of thousands
of people continue to die of this preventable,
arrestable, reversible condition.
[What’s the number 1 reason that we’re
going to die?]
Heart disease!
In the United States.
[You’re going to draw a direct correlation
between animal products and heart disease?!]
If the diet that reverses heart disease…[Well
that’s not the case, so whether or not veganism
can reverse it, are you going to draw a direct
correlation between animal products contributing
to it or causing it cause’ that’s what
you’re effectively saying?]
You don’t see the connection?
It’s even a higher burden of proof not saying
preventing even arresting I’m saying this
diet is so powerful you can reverse heart
disease meaning you have heart disease and
you can change that.
Just randomize people to a whole food plant
based diet and you can not just stop the disease
you can reverse the disease what else do you
need!
[Well in an ideal world you don’t create
it right] You’d have to somehow get straight
in your brain that the diet that reverses
the disease, pulls the plaque out of your
arteries somehow causes it?!
That makes no sense [Yeah who knows right.
Do you know of any current data that implicates
saturated fat as being correlated with heart
disease?]
Oh my gosh are you kidding me?!
[No I’m being honest] Cochrane!
C-O-C-H-R-A-N-E.
The Cochrane collaboration group.
[Where are they based?]
Excuse me?
It’s an international group, they basically
came up with this concept of evidence based
medicine.
They are considered the most unbiased, well
there is actually a little current controversy
now about the HPV vaccine but before this
latest controversy- there may be some vaccine
money on some of the research but before that
they were considered the most unbiased
[Ha ha before somebody tarnished their reputation]
It’s actually still controversial so there’s
a researcher who’s school got money from
a vaccine so whether he actually got money
or his lab or it was just part of an academic
institution that got money from a vaccine
but anyway if you’re interested in evidence,
if you’re interested in the science then
considered the most unbiased source is the
Cochrane group and Cochrane group said that
lower the saturated fat the lower the risk
of cardiovascular disease.
[Was that recent because all the recent data]
Yes that’s the latest they update every
5 years [There’s actually no consideration
when it comes to eating saturated fat until
it’s combined with high levels of glucose]
The American heart association put out a presidential
advisory just because of this nuttiness on
the internet.
Specifically put out this presidential advisory
just to say that that saturated fat causes
heart disease hello people and it’s interesting
the only thing people heard was “don’t
eat coconut oil” but if you look at the
report they say explicitly the number 1 source
is meat and dairy although I encourage people
to stay away from coconut oil too but they
had to come and just to say yes we have decades
of scientific consensus on this and anyone
who says otherwise is trying to sell you a
book.
No one is going to buy a book that says eat
broccoli.
Someone will buy a book saying here’s good
news about your bad habits eat bacon you’ll
be healthy unfortunately it’s killing people!

    Well I don't think the other guy got a look in gregor was like a broken record, the truth is about LCHF is that we only eat enough fat so we don't get hungry and we eat green leafy vegetables, of course if you eat all the meat and fat you want, you won't burn the fat, that is stored on your body. it is a balancing act of intermittent fasting, and eating the right amounts of meat and fat. I along with thousands of people have reversed my diabetes, and my cholesterol has come down. when I was a vegetarian my cholesterol went up, along with my BG. go figure!!

    Sugar is the main cause of ill health not red meat. Red meat is healthy and provides all the nutrients and minerals the body needs. There is no evidence that suggests saturated fat causes heart disease.

    yeah but the elephant in the room is the fact that no blue zone is 100% vegan and all blue zones eat some animal products. Okinawans ate pork, Sardinians eat fish, and even the China study's group of people who were doing the best and lived the longest were NOT vegan. In-fact there has never been a population who of people who have been living successful long term generation to generation as vegans.

    The term "plant based" doesn't mean vegan.

    Were the people in the studies that prove a plant based diet reverses heart disease actually vegan or were they plant based and ate some animal products? If the Okinawans ate port which is a red meat then doesn't this give an interesting twist to the IRC saying red meat is a possible carcinogen? Shouldn't we question this? We need to do better to uncover the truth.

    These are glaring issues that would have been so interesting to see what Dr Gregers answer would have been.

    With all of these issues above, if I were a simple financial planner and looking at the evidence to see what to invest in (this investment would be my health), I would not invest in being vegan long term simply because there is no evidence that it is healthy long term. Plain and simple.

    To go on this diet long term is simply a gamble at best.

    The real question is this: of all of these populations that are studied as good reasons to go vegan even though none of them are actually vegan: if a person goes 100% vegan will not having that small amount of animal products that all of these populations have end up in the person missing out on vital nutrients? Will the person develop health issues long term?

    Nobody knows. Therefore recommending a vegan diet long term is logically irresponsible.

    Great interview and I definitely agree that Dr Greger should go on the Joe Rogan podcast, might be the last push to get Joe to make the connection because bye seems quite open minded to it, fair play.

    But still, Dr. Greger promotes the extreme diet of veganism and all of its underlying deficiencies. He makes the argument that diets high in fruits and vegetables are proven to reverse disease. But whether one is onnivore, vegetarian, or even has a carnivorous orientation, they can still have a diet rich in fruits and veges.

    I consume grass fed butter and whole milk in moderation, for the preformed vitamin A, minerals, and a healthy dose of fat. Saturated fat can be readily burned as energy. Indulgent though it seems, when. I look at the amounts saturated fat and cholesterol I am consuming each day, it is WELL WITHIN government guidelines. Add to that, I am in my ideal weight range and exercise regularly.

    There is no need for restrictive diets like vegan or paleo. Stop the nonsense!

    Stay away from cocnut oil. Check. Dr. Gregor talked over the one point the interviewer made – in that the saturated fat is okay until it's combined with glucose. Not the first time I've heard that. The glucose causes a release of insulin which pulls the glucose and fat out of the blood stream and attaches the fat to the blood vessle walls causing the heart disease.

    And he admitted that all cause mortality is higher among vegans. He says so in one of his speeches and thinks that if we only eat more b12, vegans will live longer.

    He is such a moron, hyping the reversal as only vegan diet can accomplish, which is not true. Both diets can prevent heartdisease, but having a singel or double ApoE4 gene makes a low carb diet key, with lots of control to precent CHD and alzheimers.

    I can't understand how an intelligent, credible and respectful geek man like Dr greger developed such severe anger issues.

    He was so furious at the interview, he almost sounded like a neurotic pissed of vegan female with an early signs of dementia.

    It's look like he deprived his brain from essential nutrients for so long, nutrients that the body can only absorb efficiently from meat and sea food.

    I think Dr. Greger should have asked for the references which show meat is perfectly safe. That way, we could all evaluate whether the references/studies were accurate, and the keto gentleman was correct or incorrect.

    I felt better on a vegan diet. Keto dropped more weight than vegan, but I was still eating bread on a vegan diet. In a nutshell, the best diet is to consume lots of salad and cut out the bread, pasta and sugars.

    Lol who was this keto clown. Never quoted a source, just "research" or I heard. Look boys and girls, Greger is at the forefront of evidenced based research in nutrition. The evidence IS clear. If you doubt it throw up a well powered, statistically controlled trial that says otherwise.
