FIERCE DEBATE – Dairy President CONFRONTED By Vegan Activist

Now, in “News, Talk, Drive”, an advertisement in the United Kingdom is getting a lot of attention today. It’s appearing in many of the newspapers. And, it is under the headline “HUMANE MILK IS A MYTH” Under those words, is a picture of a cow under barbed wire. But, then text that describes “I went vegan the day I went to a creamery. The mothers still bloody from birth, searched and called frantically for their babies. Their daughters fresh from their mothers’ wombs but separated from them, trembled and cried piteously, drinking milk from rubber teats on the wall instead of their mothers’ nurturing bodies. All because humans take their milk.” The advert is from a campaign called… from a campaign group called ‘Go Vegan World’, and it’s founder Sandra Higgins is with us now. Sandra, the advert’s provocative. It has been approved. Tell us why you’ve put it out there. Because it’s people’s right to know what dairy is predicated on–the practices that are inherent every time we hand over our money over for cheese or milk or ice-cream (products that we think are harmless, but are actually extremely harmful for the animals who are exploited). And, do you accept… the advert… there are some problems with the ad… or people who have problems with the ad say “it makes it sound like the *moment* a calf is born, it’s taken from the mother, and that’s not the case”. The timing of the separation is irrelevant. The calves are taken from their mothers at an extremely young age. Every baby needs its mother, particularly the offspring of mammals. This is an established scientific fact, not only in humans, but in all mammals. And, in birds as well, in fact. They’re extremely… all of us are extremely vulnerable shortly after birth; they need their mothers for their psychological development. The long-term consequences of separation are equally very harmful. So, is your point that people out there who’ve had milk on their breakfast cereal or in their coffee or in their tea today, they’re just blind to this, or choose to be? I would say that most people are like I was. A couple of years ago, I thought that dairy was a healthy product, I enjoyed it. I thought it was absolutely harmless. I think most people are not aware. So, the reason that I run this campaign –and it’s not only about dairy; it’s about all forms of animal abuse– is to let people see the truth, so that they can make an informed choice. Ok, Sandra, stay with us. Also with me today is John Comer, the President of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association John, you’re reaction to the advert and what you’ve heard there from Sandra? I have no problem at all with vegans. They’re entitled to be vegans, and I would be all for and supportive of an inclusive society. Where I have a major problem is misrepresentation of the situation, and I think it’s absolutely polar off the view that I would have and that the vast majority of the world population would have. And, I’m afraid that Sandra’s gone against all nutritional recommendations by all the eminent people that are qualified to give advice. And, my one big concern from this is (it’s not because of vested interest; everybody knows I’m a dairy farmer and I represent dairy farmers) But, all the nutritional evidence that we have to date supports a balanced diet that incorporates dairy for the development of our teenage children, who may have been listening to you right now Chris, and as you know, that age group are very very influential. And, I would like to make sure that they’re in possession of the facts from a professional basis of the establish science in this country to make sure they make informed choices. Ok, John, just… [unintelligible] …is playing on the emotions of people, and it’s misrepresenting the reality. We have the highest animal welfare standards in . the . world. But John, I would like you… I would like you to be able to talk on radio about this science. The world’s dietetics associations have issued position statements on plant diets, and they say that a plant diet (a 100% plant diet) is more than adequate for human nutritional needs. In fact, it prevents many of the illnesses that are associated with consuming animal products that people are suffering from and that cause premature death. So, it is a misrepresentation of the science. I would like to refer listeners to my website goveganworld.com, which links to the evidence based facts from institutes like The Physician’s Commity for Responsible Medicine, for the website NutritionFacts.org, run by eminent scientists and researchers, that show that first of all, animal foods are not necessary, and secondly, they actually are associated with a lot of the illnesses that people are suffering from. So, animal rights rights is also a human rights issue… Let’s let John reply to that. So, Sandra, you’ve… um… John, the point that Sandra is making is you can have as healthy, if not, healthier a diet by being 100% “plant”. I would refute that out of hand. I mean, it’s utter nonsense to be.. to be.. not to put a tooth in it [=to speak undiplomatically] If you go into every single GP practice in the country, GPs have no nutritional qualifications, John. There would be one or two exceptions. They take their guidance from the qualified people that have the body of evidence. But GPs are NOT qual… GPs are NOT qualified. The fact is… The fact is… (and now, it’s nothing against vegans)… You have to take cocktail after cocktail of… of.. of.. of.. of.. products…. But, that is utter nonsense! Utter nonsense! ….to try and balance the diet. That is nonsense, John. [John:] Why… Why… Why… do you think… [Sandra:] Vegans eat… vegans eat… Excuse me, vegans a balanced diet. They eat a balanced diet… [John:] I mean, 5,000 years ago we were about 4’7”. [Sandra:] …fortified foods the same as people on an omnivorous diet. [Chris:] Ok, just one second! Just one second… So, John’s accusation, Sandra, is that you are fortifying your diet with supplements. Actually, you don’t need to take supplements. If vegans eat fortified food, they get a fully complementary diet. Now, most of the B12 manufactured in this Earth is manufactured to feed to farmed animals because they lack it. And, that’s why there is B12 present in animal food. It’s not justifiable to use them because vegan foods are low in vitamin B12. Ok. Look, you’re both… you’re both… Everybody else… No, everybody else is also eating fortified foods (after World War II). Ok, just one second, just one second, both of you because you’re both obviously very passionate. But, I just want to take a step back from the nutritional discussion you’re having. John, to the accusation in the advert, which is that milk and its production–even if it is nutritional–is inhumane by the manner in which calves are taken from their mothers, and the advert is very description about… descriptive about that. From an Irish point of view, from your members’ point of view, is that the case? In under 24hrs, would a calf be separated from its mother? [John:] That is absolutely… The case is that we farm to the highest standards that are prescribed by European legislation, as the elected representatives of society across Europe, the politicians that have been elected to represent the people put the legislation in place, and we adhere to that legislation. [Chris:] But how quickly… Sandra, just one second. Let John answer: How quickly, John, would a calf be separated from its mother after birth? [John:] That’s… There’s no prescription as far [as] what time the calves can be separated; that’s up to the individual farmer. But, the reality is… [Chris:] Are we talking 12 hours? It can be 12 [hours] or it can be 3 months. [Sandra:] The Irish legislation recommends that the mother licks the calf. [John:] It didn’t make any difference. That’s what Sandra’s… Separation can even be more difficult as… …as more time goes on. [Sandra:] But the issue is not the legislation. [John:] If we didn’t have farmers, and we didn’t have a structure, and if we didn’t have a product that was commercial, there would be no animals at all, unless you had these extreme lovers that wanted to house them. I’ve heard the most ridiculous arguments that animals should be let roam. And, who would maintain the land, and who would fence the land, and who would keep them off the road? And, how… how… heh… how… would… John, we wouldn’t have… we wouldn’t have… You’re ex.. You’re precisely right. It wouldn’t exist if people like you didn’t breed them. If there wasn’t a market for dairy products, these animals would not exist. We have destroyed them. [John:] We’d have osteoporosis. We’d have underdevelopment of teenagers. [Sandra:] Osteoporosis is related to animal food. [John:] We would go back about… to neolithic man, where we’d all go back to being all hairy and about 4’3” if we didn’t have a balanced diet. Look, the farmers are doing it because there is a requirement from every… almost every person in Europe that recognises the value of it, that takes their guidance from the professionals (nutritionalists) that understand the science. In fact, it has done the opposite to what Sandra is saying because, in fact, I mean, butter has come on in leaps and bounds in terms of its nutritional value. John, you know, the argument is not about nutrition. We’ve already established that we don’t need… [John:] It’s about animal welfare. [Sandra:] No, it’s not about… [John:] Or else, the animals wouldn’t be there. [Sandra:] John, hold on.. John, [John:] What is it? If it’s not about nutrition, and it’s not about animal welfare, what is it about? [Sandra:] It’s not about animal welfare. It’s about we do not have the right to own and exploit other animals who have the same feelings as we do. You see, [John:] Now, we’re getting to the … [Sandra:] The Declara… Yes. So, you’re saying an ant has the same feeling as a human being? [Chris:] Ah, no, we’re talking about COWS, John. Do cows have feelings? [John:] Ah, now, come on! Where do you draw the line? So, wh… [Sandra:] In order… So… Can you… If you let me speak… [John:] …on ants or… [Sandra:] In 2012, the Declaration of Consciousness was passed, that discussed conscious awareness in other animals. They have the same conscious awareness of humans; they have the same interest in THEIR lives as humans. They experience pretty much the same physical and emotional states that WE do. So, all right, Could I ask you a question, Sandra? [Chris:] Let Sandra finish her point. John, just one moment. One… John, one moment, please. One moment. Let Sandra… just… Sandra, finish your point. Because they are sentient and conscious and aware of their lives, they feel what we do to them. And, what we do to them harms them. To take a baby away from her… from their mother harms both the mother and the baby. And, we take them away for something that’s not necessary. What John has said about nutrition is ill-informed. Ok, you’ve made your point, San… And, John, to be fair to Sandra, that is the CRUX of the advert. That is what the advert says: it’s inhumane. Why did she have to come on… on.. on… on… [Chris:] Now, you brought up nutrition, John. Now, you were the first to raise nutrition. And, you.. both of you have made made your… Both of you have made your points on nutrition. John, the qu… No no, Sandra… Sandra, no no no no… I’m sorry, guys, people need to understand you. Sandra has made her point on it being inhumane. John, your response? My response is it’s absolutely NOT. As I keep saying to you, we’re adhering to the highest standards in the globe in Ireland. But, it’s not about standards. You’re trying to regulate something that has been ruled inherently inhumane. When you dig your shovel into the ground, you kill 1,000 worms to make your protein pr… or whatever other source you’re getting at. I’m trying to make my point back to you now: the reality… You kill an awful lot more, John, because you’re using infinitely more crops to feed the cows to get the milk. And, somebody like me, as a vegan, is consuming directly. And, furthermore, veganic growing methods inflict significantly less harm than traditional methods. And we… Farming is unsustainable. Dairy farming is unsustainable. The lifestyle of farmers is very unsatisfactory; the income is very low. Plant foods are increasing in sales; dairy foods are decreasing in sales. And, in order to care about humans and farmers as well as other animals, we need to move with the times. You’ve had a good run there, Sandra. Ah, John, have you ever had a vegan meal? Indeed, I h… wooo, that’s a tricky one, now! Maybe, I would’ve had vegetarian. No, not vegan! Because, Sandra, here’s the point: both of you have a, you know, a lot of common understanding and respect for each other. I LIVE with a vegan. My housemate’s a vegan. And, the odd time, you end up eating a vegan meal. But, it’s not, if you like, shoved down your throat like this advert. And, what would you say to you have chosen to eat the way you eat; other people choose dairy. What would you say about the militant nature of the advert, Sandra? It’s not a matter of choice when somebody else’s life and death is at stake. That is not your choice; you don’t have the right to inflict that on anybody else. [Chris:] (on the cow) If you asked that cow, “do you want your baby taken? Do you want to be artificially inseminated, and do you want to walk into the slaughterhouse?”, they would say, “no”. You can bet your bottom dollar they’d say “no”. I don’t… I don’t think so because when animals would be roaming in the wild, they come up under horrendous suffering from breaks and falls and everything else. They’re housed, they’re cared for. They go to bed to straw. They’re always lying down… …an indication of a cow’s contentment. I wouldn’t say ‘happiness’ because I don’t share your view that they’re equal to us as humans, but… But, that is a scientific theory, you can’t not share *science*. Guys, you’re not gonna… It’s not an *opinion*. You’re not gonna agree, but we greatly appreciate both of you giving us your opinions. Sandra Higgins of GoVeganWorld, and John Comer, the President of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association. Thank you both for your time. Back in a moment.

John Cromer, what a load of shit. You're inhumane if you think it's okay to take a baby away from 12 hours or 3 months or whenever. There's no debate to that, end of story. And Sandra didn't even bring up how constant the insemination is, or the slaughter of male calfs or locking them up to turn into veal.

I think the president farmer knows he’s absolutely wrong but he’s gone past the point of no return and has to protect what he’s invested, for what I can only assume years since he is the president, and must defend it. It absolutely blows my mind that he thinks that because there are “standards” that it makes it ok to do this to animals. It’s that mentality that tarnishes our morals as a species. When will we wake up from this? God help us.

When you're ignorant of the facts and you don't yet understand animals' ability to feel, you are not making a personal choice by buying dairy… you are making an uninformed choice. These ads are far from shoving veganism down people's throats they are there to educate and provide insight into what actually goes in order for you to get that cow's breast milk that you think you want/need.

These debates are so pointless.. "Animals would have worse lives in the wild if we didn't care for them on farms." That is so stupid on so many levels. We breed them into these situations to take care of them before we slaughter them? Like all animals don't want the chance to be free in the wild? Lets be realistic here and realize that the very things that we thought we needed for protein and calcium actually ruin our health, destroy the environment and hurt innocent sentient beings. These companies should be shut down, the owners should be convicted of animal abuse to the livestock and human beings and our health. This world is sick and needs to be cured.

it's easy to decide, the dairy farmer is defending his money, Sandra is defending animal's lives with no money to it.

Great interview. Sandra made all the relevant points. Farming animals is inhumane full stop. He was defending the indefensible. Well done Sandra! Go vegan for compassion

I find it interesting to listen to these debates, but also maddening that people talk over each other. That’s so frustrating I could scream when it happens. Shut up and let someone talk! Also, I think debates like this are pointless in one sense, because people just don’t change their minds often – that’s why there are so few vegans, like myself. But, I think debates are important, too, because at the very least, someone watching it will know the truth – how they choose to act on that truth is up to them.

The Dairy Farmer does not know his facts. Vegans don’t take supplements. Vit B12 is supplemented to the cow’s.
