French Onion Chicken – Savory Chicken – Low Carb Keto Recipes

Welcome all! Papa G here. Today i present
French Onion Chicken. This recipe packs a
whole lot of flavor in a small chicken
package. From the sweetness of the onions,
to the creamy, nuttiness of the two
different types of cheeses, you’ll enjoy
a wonderful chicken entree from a very
simple recipe. Let’s get started.
I find it easier to mix our spice blend first and we’ll mix
our spices in our herbs separately. To 1
small bowl add 2 teaspoons of garlic
powder; some salt; some ground black
pepper; and a little cayenne pepper. Give
a mix to combine. To another bowl, add some oregano;
dried thyme; and some sage. Mix to combine
and set our herbs and spices aside. The
reason i like to separate the herbs and
spices is the finer spices will settle
at the bottom and the leafy herbs on top
if we mix them together, making it just a
bit harder to distribute evenly when we
apply them to the chicken. To a skillet on
medium-high heat, add 4 tablespoons of
unsalted butter. Also, add 1 tablespoon of
extra virgin olive oil. Adding the oil to
the butter will help raise the smoke
point so our butter won’t burn so easily.
Add one large sliced onion. Season with
some salt; ground black pepper; and some
rosemary. Stir and cook for about three
to four minutes on medium high heat.
Reduce the heat to medium and stir and
cook for about another 15 minutes, or
until they go from a white and yellow, to
a brownish tan color, and look a little
something like this.
Now I had a generous amount of minced
garlic and just about a teaspoon of a
sugar substitute. Now add some red wine
and give this video a thumbs up if you
like cooking with wine; and leave me a
comment if you also like to include it
in your recipes. Continue to cook until
it reduces to something like this. Turn
off the heat and let cool just a bit as
we work on our chicken.
Lightly oil a 9 by 13 inch baking dish. Place 8 chicken
thighs, bottoms up, on the bottom of the
dish. Season the bottoms with the spice
blend and then add the herbs. Flip the
chicken over and repeat. Now divide our
onions evenly over the tops of the
chicken. Top each with one slice of
provolone cheese. Cover with foil and
bake in the center of a preheated 400°F
oven for about 25 minutes. Remove
from the oven. Uncover; and add some
freshly grated Gruyere cheese to the top.
You want to be sure to use Gruyere
cheese. This cheese melts wonderfully and
is often used in most fondues. It adds
the perfect nuttiness and the texture we
want. Top with a generous amount of
parsley and place, uncovered, back in the
oven for an additional 5 minutes. Remove
and let cool just a bit. Serve hot and
enjoy a wonderful chicken meal.
There you have it folks! My French Onion
Chicken. A great tasting low carbohydrate chicken
entree. I hope you enjoyed this video . If

  12. David Squire Posted on April 3, 2019 at 11:35 am

Can't wait to give this a try; wine is a game changer for sure but which type of red wine did you use? Pinot, Merlot, or Cabernet Sauvignon?

I love your recipes and thank you for cooking with wine even while low carb. It brings so much flavor.

Love french onion soup so this is a great ode to it.

  26. Laura Filby Posted on April 3, 2019 at 3:47 pm

Ooooh, Papa, this looks delicious. I like to cook with wine too. You know I adore You and your content, so I’m saying this out of love (and with respect) but you’re not supposed to cook with extra virgin olive oil.
Olive oil is the one you cook with, extra virgin olive oil is for salads/making sauces, such as pesto, mayonnaise, ranch etc. When you cook with evoo, there’s a reaction to the heat and that’s not good for you. Just a heads up. I’m NOT hating, I am just trying to be helpful. x

That looks very delicious! Awesome recipe papaG

  28. KR Posted on April 3, 2019 at 6:18 pm

This looks amazing, I don't know how you keep coming up with recipes the way you do (and really good ones) your channel will definitely live on for many years to come. Great stuff as always!

  29. Judy Colson Posted on April 3, 2019 at 7:19 pm

Looks like a French Onion Soup Casserole! Intense flavors. Gruyere is a good cheese, a bit nuttier than Swiss. Thanks for this and all your wonderful recipes!

  30. Lady Hawke Posted on April 3, 2019 at 7:55 pm

Yum, wine is good! I will make this one this week. Thanks for another easy and delectable recipe!

  31. Mar J Posted on April 4, 2019 at 1:24 am

I am not cooking with wine, so I don't have any at home. Can I omit it or substitute with something else? Thanks

  32. ElBigRican Posted on April 4, 2019 at 1:29 am

This looks amazing but I'm scared to eat onions. Last time I added onions to my omelette, it took me out of ketosis. Didn't know onions had so many carbs. You think this recipe might be ok with the amount of onions used?

  33. The Low Carb Canuck Posted on April 4, 2019 at 2:08 am

Papa G, when is the cookbook coming out? You and your recipes rock! I'm currently in a hotel in northern Maine thinking to myself, if I only had an oven. 🙂 When I get home and cook this recipe you'll make me look like a star.

  34. CJsKetoKitchen.com Posted on April 4, 2019 at 4:38 am

    Looks delicious Papa G! Wow!

  35. bella123 Posted on April 4, 2019 at 1:08 pm

Omgosh, I am so going to make this. I was running out of ideas for my chicken thighs for dinher, I have this feeling I will be killing this recipe. Thank you so much!

  36. Zombeastsqurl Posted on April 4, 2019 at 2:51 pm

Your voice reminds me of Morgan Freeman in Shawshank Redemption. Lol.

  37. Anita T Posted on April 4, 2019 at 3:46 pm

Boy, that looks good! Glen, are you a cook/chef by profession or do you dabble in the kitchen like I do? This looks like another winner. Thanks for the ongoing plethora of recipes! I especially love that I have most spices in my cupboard. The fresh stuff usually goes bad before I get to use it up! And you pronounced "gruyere" pretty good for an anglo-american! 🙂

  38. S Posted on April 4, 2019 at 4:49 pm

New to your channel, your thumbnail totally got me!!!!! 😍😋I'm going to try this thanks for sharing and the inspiration. New subscriber!!😃

  39. Tanya S Posted on April 4, 2019 at 6:14 pm

With light or light colored veggies, I prefer to use white wine! So, in this case with onions, I’d use a Pinot Gris or a Chardonnay.

  40. Imani Ife Posted on April 5, 2019 at 3:52 pm

I like the recipe & plan to try it; however, minus the alcohol! Yup, I'm personally a no go on wine, etc. in my life. I just became a new subbie. Yummm!

  41. Biz888 Posted on April 5, 2019 at 11:09 pm

I cooked this yesterday. I used whatever cheeses I had in the fridge and came out really delicious. My husband gave it 5/5 stars! Thank you Papa G. Your keto recipes are the best!

  42. Alan Caye Posted on April 6, 2019 at 3:33 am

Looks great and I'll be trying something at least similar soon. But I have been searching my local markets and have not found gruyere cheese anywhere yet. For what it's worth I'm in Central Florida.

  43. Lola Larue Posted on April 6, 2019 at 5:54 pm

Yes on the wine! It imparts such a wonderful flavor in many recipes and the alcohol evaporates out. This recipe is a culinary delight! I threw in a few mushrooms with the onions.

  44. Morpheus Jones Posted on April 10, 2019 at 5:36 am

Just made this tonight. Papa G for President!! This was a winner!! Amazing flavors! You know your way around Flavortown for sure!
