Quest Nutrition “Protein Chips” Review: An Honest Overview

Hey guys, Sean Nalewanyj here of,
and today I’m going to be giving you my honest, and unbiased review of the brand new
Quest Protein Chips that you may have heard about, which are basically a high protein
potato chip snack, and I’ll post a link down in the description box if you want to
check them out. Now I previously did a review of Quest’s Protein Bars a few weeks back
which I am a big fan of, and I’ll also link that in the description box below, and so
today I’ll just be covering the protein chips by going over the ingredients, the nutritional
profile, the taste, the texture and then I’ll just give you my final thoughts on what I
think of the product as a whole and who I would ultimately recommend it to. Now keep
in mind here that I’m NOT specifically sponsored or affiliated with Quest Nutrition and these
are simply my real, unbiased thoughts on this particular product. So first up are the ingredients
and the nutritional profile, which Quest really did a great job on. Each bag of chips gives
you 21 grams of high quality protein from a combination of milk protein isolate (which
is a combination of both casein and whey) and whey protein isolate, and along with that,
the carbohydrate and the fat content is also extremely low with only 5 grams of carbs and
2 grams of fat per bag. So if your goal is to increase your protein intake with minimal
additional carbs and fats, then these chips will definitely fit well into your overall
diet. So next up is the taste and texture. There are currently 3 flavors that they offer,
they have Barbecue, Cheddar & Sour Cream and Sea Salt, and in my opinion (and in the opinion
of almost everyone else I’ve seen who has done a review on these chips) the Barbecue
is far and away the most enjoyable flavor of the three. It has a good sort of smoky,
sweet flavor to it and the seasoning itself tastes pretty much just like any regular barbecue
chip that you might eat. The Cheddar & Sour Cream was my second favorite, and the Sea
Salt was my least favorite of the three. So in terms of the actual seasoning that they
use on the chips, I really do think that all 3 flavors taste pretty good overall. The initial
crunch on the chips is also quite good, and although it does feel a bit different from
an actual potato chip since they do have a thinner and lighter texture to them, this
is still another area that I was pretty impressed with overall. My two main areas of criticism
though would be the after-taste and the after-texture. I find that the first few bites always start
off really nicely, but once you continue to chew them up a bit more, the chips do seem
to give off a bit of an odd after-taste that doesn’t really taste much like a regular
potato chip to me personally, and on top of that, the texture also seems to turn to a
bit of a gritty feel that I wasn’t a huge fan of. However, it’s very important to
keep things in perspective here and to remember that you’re dealing with a product that
is giving you 21 grams of high quality protein with minimal carbs and fat. Obviously it shouldn’t
be expected that they’re going to taste just like regular potato chips, in the same
way that you wouldn’t expect a protein bar to taste just like a regular chocolate bar.
Ultimately you purchase a product like this with the understanding that you’re getting
a high protein alternative, and as a result of that, you are going to be sacrificing a
bit of taste in the process. And in addition to that, also remember that taste is highly
subjective, and this is just my personal opinion. I’ve watched and read many other Quest Protein
Chip reviews online, with some of those reviews being even less forgiving than me, and with
others having nothing but good things to say about it, so the only way to really know for
sure is to try them out for yourself. So overall, for the intended purpose of creating a potato
chip alternative with high protein and minimal carbs and fat, I do think that Quest did a
good job here. Would I recommend them to others? Well, if you’re looking for a high protein
snack to take with you on the go aside from regular protein bars, or if the actual “high
protein potato chip” concept appeals to you, then yes, I would say that they are worth
a try and I would be comfortable recommending them. Would I personally purchase them? I’d
have to say probably not, but only because I much prefer their protein bars as my protein
source to take with me on the go, and I’m just not huge on potato chips in the first
place. Now the final thing I would point out here is the fact that, if you are craving
potato chips as part of your muscle building or your fat burning diet, it’s not as if
regular baked potato chips are that bad of an option in the first place anyway if you
do eat them in moderate amounts. The only real difference is that you’ll be swapping
out a high carbohydrate snack for a high protein snack, and this may be totally fine depending
on how your overall daily macronutrient intake is structured. An equal amount of Baked Lays
(so 120 grams) that’s going to provide you with 23 grams of carbs, 2 grams of protein
and 2 grams of fat, and you’ll be getting an actual bag of real potato chips, so in
the end, it really just comes down to your individual preferences and your individual
needs. If you’re already able to hit your daily protein requirements with relative ease,
then a product like this may or may not have any real application for you, since you can
simply go ahead and eat regular baked potato chips instead and just add it to your carbohydrate
total for the day. However, if for whatever reason it’s specifically a high protein
snack that you’re after (for example, if you were in a fat loss phase and you had lower
daily calorie and carbohydrate totals to work with), then I do feel that Quest Protein Chips
are worth giving a try to see how you personally like them because they are a good product
for their intended purpose, and again I’ll provide a link in the description box below

    hey sean this may seem like a dumb question, maybe you could make a video on it. if you consume lets say 200 g's of protein a day via shakes, tuna,nuts, veggies, fruit, w/e it may be, meat, whatever. am i getting all 200 grams of protein or only about 70- 75 % because of other things like carbs and fats, thanks
